Power in the Prep: Your Pre-Summer Bike Tune-Up Checklist

FiftyOne Bikes in Seattle

Before the summer sun rises high and your tires hit the road for long, purposeful miles, there’s one thing every cyclist should prioritize: the tune-up.

Whether you’re training for Obliteride or just gearing up for weekend adventures, a properly prepped bike is non-negotiable. It’s not just about performance—it’s about showing up for the cause, ready to give your best. Because smooth rides equal more impact per mile.

Let’s make sure your bike is dialed in and mission-ready.

The Essential Tune-Up Checklist

 Tires & Wheels

  • Check for wear, dry rot, or embedded debris

  • Inflate to optimal PSI

  • Spin each wheel to check for wobbles or truing issues

 Brakes

  • Inspect brake pads for wear

  • Confirm responsive, even braking

  • Check for cable tension or hydraulic fluid levels (depending on your setup)

Drivetrain

  • Clean and lube your chain

  • Inspect cassette and chainrings for wear

  • Ensure smooth shifting across all gears

Bolts & Torque

  • Tighten all key bolts (stem, seatpost, crankset)

  • Use a torque wrench for critical components—especially carbon frames and parts

Cables & Housing

  • Look for fraying, rust, or stiffness

  • Replace if shifting feels sluggish or braking is inconsistent

Suspension (if applicable)

  • Check air pressure in suspension forks

  • Wipe down stanchions and inspect seals for leaks

  • Reset sag and rebound to your preferred settings

Fit & Comfort Check

  • Adjust saddle height and tilt

  • Confirm cleat positioning

  • Make micro adjustments for long-ride comfort—especially before charity events like Obliteride

Why This Matters More Than Ever

When you’re riding for a cause—like raising funds for cancer research through Fred Hutch's Obliteride—you’re not just out for yourself. You’re part of something bigger.

Every skipped gear, flat tire, or brake squeal is energy and focus pulled away from your mission. When your bike is dialed, you can give your full strength, heart, and intention to the road ahead.

Tuning up is an act of commitment. It says: I’m ready. Let’s ride.
